The International Conference of Postgraduate Researchers 2026, organised by the Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies, University of Kelaniya, was held on 10 August 2026. The conference provided an important platform for postgraduate researchers to present their research, exchange knowledge, and engage in meaningful academic discussions. The Hospitality Hub of the Tourism Club, University of Kelaniya, participated in the conference as a team of student volunteers, supporting the successful coordination of the event.
A total of 15 Hospitality Hub members participated as volunteers, comprising 10 students from the second year of the Special Degree programme and five students from the first year of the Special Degree programme. Their participation provided a valuable opportunity to gain practical experience in hospitality, guest relations, event coordination, and conference management.
The volunteers were involved in several aspects of the conference. At the registration area, Hospitality Hub members assisted with welcoming participants and distributing name tags, souvenirs, and other materials prepared for conference attendees. Their involvement at the registration desk provided practical experience in participant coordination and professional interaction with guests.
Another important responsibility assigned to the Hospitality Hub was the provision of breakfast for conference participants and guests. Breakfast consisted of a sandwich and a cup of tea. The volunteers worked together to serve the refreshments efficiently while maintaining appropriate standards of hospitality. This activity provided students with practical exposure to food and beverage service and helped them understand the importance of coordination, cleanliness, punctuality, and time management in hospitality operations.
Hospitality Hub members were also assigned to the various academic sessions conducted throughout the conference. With approximately twelve sessions, two Hospitality Hub members were assigned to each session. They assisted with the smooth functioning of the sessions, responded to the needs of participants and organisers, and provided support where required. Through these responsibilities, students gained firsthand experience in conference coordination and guest-service management.
The volunteering experience provided students with an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills gained through their academic studies in a real-world setting. They developed their ability to communicate effectively, work collaboratively, manage assigned responsibilities, and interact professionally with guests, researchers, and event organisers. The experience also contributed to strengthening their confidence, interpersonal skills, and understanding of professional hospitality practices.
The dedication and enthusiasm demonstrated by all 15 volunteers contributed to creating a well-organised and welcoming environment for the conference. By fulfilling their assigned duties responsibly and working together as a team, the students demonstrated the importance of teamwork, communication, and coordination within the hospitality and tourism sectors. Their participation also highlighted the valuable role that university students can play in supporting academic and professional events.
The Hospitality Hub of the Tourism Club, University of Kelaniya, extends its sincere gratitude to Professor Chandima Bogahawatta, Head of the Department of Archaeology, University of Kelaniya, and Mr. Nivean Wickramarathne, Assistant Lecturer, for their valuable guidance, encouragement, and support in facilitating this volunteering opportunity. Their support provided students with an important platform to gain practical experience and develop their professional competencies.
The participation of the Hospitality Hub at the International Conference of Postgraduate Researchers 2026 was a valuable and memorable learning experience for all 15 student volunteers. The students gained practical knowledge in hospitality, guest relations, teamwork, communication, and event management. Such experiences complement their academic learning and contribute to their preparation for future opportunities in the tourism and hospitality industries.
