Welcome to the Department of Archaeology, University of Kelaniya.
Archaeology is a journey into the human story — a scientific quest to understand how people lived, created, and shaped the world we inherit today. It is not only the study of ancient cultures, but the discovery of ideas, technologies, and values that continue to shape modern society.
At Kelaniya, we see archaeology as a bridge between past and present, local heritage and global knowledge. Our approach is multidisciplinary, linking heritage conservation, cultural resource management, tourism, and digital humanities.
We offer a student-centred learning environment. Our teaching combines classroom learning with fieldwork, laboratory training, and hands-on research. From excavation sites to heritage projects, we encourage curiosity, critical thinking, and professional confidence.
Our mission is to shape the next generation of archaeologists — graduates who are skilled, ethical, and passionate about exploring the past to inspire the future.
