In celebration of the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development 2026, the Department of Archaeology, University of Kelaniya, successfully organised a one-day academic programme and workshop on 21 May 2026 at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences. The event brought together academics, students, and participants from universities across Sri Lanka to engage in meaningful discussions on cultural diversity, contested heritage, peacebuilding, and sustainable development.
As part of the event, the Tourism Club of the Department of Archaeology proudly took on the responsibility of coordinating food and beverage services through a specially established initiative, the Hospitality Hub. The initiative was formed to provide a professional, welcoming, and memorable hospitality experience for all guests and participants. The committee consisted of ten dedicated student volunteers who represented the Hospitality Hub while wearing specially designed aprons throughout the event.
The Hospitality Hub operated under the guidance of the Department of Archaeology's academic staff, whose support and leadership were instrumental to the programme's successful completion. The committee carefully planned and managed all hospitality activities, ensuring guests received high-quality service throughout the event.
The day commenced with a breakfast service featuring sandwiches, rolls, and a selection of beverages available in three different flavours, allowing guests to choose according to their preferences. This personalised approach was highly appreciated by attendees and contributed to creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Lunch arrangements were organised in two separate sessions. For academic staff members and invited resource persons, the Hospitality Hub created a refined hotel-style buffet experience. Guests were warmly welcomed by a hostess before enjoying a carefully arranged buffet accompanied by soft live background music, creating a relaxing dining environment. Simultaneously, lunch packets were distributed to student participants, who were given the opportunity to select their preferred meal options.
The programme concluded with an afternoon tea session, during which guests were served tea accompanied by two varieties of cake. The refreshments provided an opportunity for participants to continue networking and exchanging ideas in a comfortable and friendly setting.
More than 150 participants attended the event, including students and lecturers from several universities across Sri Lanka. The Hospitality Hub received overwhelmingly positive feedback, with many guests appreciating the aesthetic presentation of the buffet arrangements and the unique approach to hospitality and food service. The initiative successfully demonstrated how professional hospitality management can enhance the overall experience of an academic event while reflecting organisation, professionalism, and attention to detail.
Beyond serving refreshments, the Hospitality Hub also provided valuable practical experience for its student members. Committee members expressed their enthusiasm and appreciation for the opportunity, noting that the initiative extended beyond traditional food service by introducing them to event hospitality management, guest relations, teamwork, and professional presentation.
The Tourism Club extends its sincere gratitude to Professor Chandima Bogahawatta, Senior Lecturer K.V.J. Koshalee, and Assistant Lecturer Mr. Nivean Wickramarathna for their continuous guidance, encouragement, and support throughout the programme. The Club also wishes to thank the Department of Archaeology and all committee members whose dedication and teamwork contributed to the success of this initiative.
The Hospitality Hub stands as an excellent example of student leadership, innovation, collaboration, and service excellence, setting a strong benchmark for future academic and university events at the University of Kelaniya.
